The Appeal Court has dismissed preliminary objections filed by former Northern Chief Minister C V Vigneshwaran and two others in the contempt of court case filed against them.
The case was filed against the former Chief Minister and Northern Provincial Councillors Ananda Shashidaran and K. Sivanesan by Northern Provincial Councillor B. Deniswaran.
Mr. Deniswaran had claimed that former Chief Minister Wigneshwaran had acted in contempt of court by breaching the interim injunction that was issued on his removal from the post of Provincial Councils Minister of Fisheries and Transport.
The suspects while filing preliminary objections had claimed that the Appeal Court was not vested with the powers to hear cases involving contempt of court.
However, the Appeal Court's two-member trial-at-bar comprising Justices Kumudini Wickramasinghe and Janak de Silva had dismissed the objections today and announced that it would continue to hear the case.
The case was also postponed until February 15 as Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe had rescued herself from the judge bench.
