General Sarath Fonseka during an exclusive interview with CNN -IBN Live said he didn't believe the Army had committed any crimes during the final stages of the country's civil war and that he hopes to be heard when the inquiry on alleged war crimes happens otherwise it will be a one sided inquiry.
He added that the commander cannot be punished for the crimes of individuals.
He was quoted during the interview a saying the following
"I dont believe the army has committed any crimes . I supervised all the military operations to the minute details. I commanded the operations with verbal instructions. There were no written orders during the whole of that operation. So commiting war crimes is out of the question."
"Well the orders were clear that 12000 LTTErs surrended. They were taken in they were protected they were rehabilitated , they were released. That was 12,ooo ltters. Youi cant blame the army commander for every crime that has taken place on the field."
"If there is an inquiry then we shoiuld be given a chance to facethe inquiry and they must listen to us also. If it is a one sided story yoiu cant call it an inquiry.
The military taking over the land was part of the battle at that time, the war is over and the army will have to gradually pull back."
