Around 500 persons have been arrested during the Vesak Festival season for breaching Excise Laws, the Department of Excise said.
The suspects had been taken into custody during search operations which were carried out since May 17.
Items such as liqour, spirits were also seized during the search operations.
The Excise Department noted that these operations were still in effect.
The Department had deployed 1200 Excise officials to arrest law breakers after liqour shops were ordered to be closed from May 17 - May 20 in line with Vesak.
