Ash emitted from the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai has fallen onto fields of crops at Ilanthadiya, causing severe inconveniences to local farmers.
Farmers claimed that an ash cloud was emitted from the direction of the plant on June 23, scattering ash over their crops and causing panic in the area. They claim that the ash fell for about five minutes.
When contacted, Manaager of the Lakvijaya Plant, Indrajith Gallage said that a technical fault had occurred when the coal had been burned and was in the process of precipitation. This had resulted in some ash escaping from the plant. However, the fault was rectified in a matter of minutes, he stressed.
Mr Gallage added that plant officials have contacted local farmers over the incident and teams have been dispatched to look into the situation.
