An assistant customs Officer and an Inspector were sent on compulsory leave for three weeks owing to their involvement in a Rs 40 million tax fraud of a businessman, Customs Officials told court yesterday (Feb 18).
The Customs Department had taken this decision following a probe carried out by the Customs Central Investigations Unit into claims of a customs officer being linked to the fraud.
The businessman had imported a consignment of beedi leaves weighing 12 tonnes under the pretext of importing ladies wear in a bid to export them to Bangladesh.
The container was seized on December 03 after it came to light that the suspect had submitted false information to the Customs while importing the consignment of beedi leaves.
