Two suspects who were attempting to bring in a stock of fish unsuitable for human consumption to the Angunukolapelessa Prison were detained by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) yesterday.
A lorry which was transporting the stock of fish was stopped and searched near the prison complex by the PHIs on a tip-off.
It has been revealed that food unsuitable for human consumption has been transported to the Angunukolapelessa Prison on previous occasions, prompting an investigation by prison authorities. Suppliers found to have supplied such food to the prison were even warned about the matter, but the latest detection indicates that food unsuitable for human consumption is still being taken to be fed to prison inmates.
The two arrested suspects, who are residents of Tangalle, were produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court where they were fined Rs 3000 each after pleading guilty to transporting and providing food unsuitable for human consumption. The magistrate further ordered that the stock of fish weighing 59kg that were deemed unsuitable for human consumption be destroyed.
