The India funded ambulance service which was begun recently saw the birth of a baby from Matara. The ambulance service was called as the young 28-year old expectant mother was in labour, however while on the way to hospital she gave birth to the baby in the ambulance with the aid of trained paramedics.
The ambulance service is the country's first free service rendered in the Western and Southern provinces and launched with 88 ambulances. The local subsidiary of the service is GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute, the world's largest integrated ambulance service provider.
The service is funded entirely by an Indian government grant of Rs. 1 billion.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
