The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has urged that the government not proceed with the proposed Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement, without providing an opportunity for the people to understand its true nature.
Issuing a statement the BASL said, it was taking this step based on the assurance given previously by the government that it would not take any steps towards signing the agreement without making a full disclosure of its contents to the public after obtaining the organisation's views.
The BASL said the draft agreement which was previously made available to them had a multitude of disadvantageous clauses for Sri Lanka.
"The proposed MCC as it stood then contained many issues of a very grave nature as explained by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in writing," the BASL said.
Further, the statement read, "It is our belief that the draft proposals should be made available for Democratic debate before committing the country to honour an agreement which only a privileged few have been privy."
