Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (Sri Lanka CERT) warned social media users of scam messages claiming to offer free data which have been circulated as known trusted organizations, a statement from the IT body said.
The cyber agency warned that those messages are targetted to steal personal information of the users as websites behind these scams might change into phishing sites at any time which might result in losing access to users' sensitive data and online accounts.
Those messages that claim to offer free data pretend to come from other well known organizations or brands to gain the users trust into clicking these links. “These messages are part of a click fraud which is a monetization scheme that relies on racking up bogus ad clicks that bring revenues for the operators of these scams,” CERT said in a warning.
