A businessman who attempted to smuggle gold jewellery worth more than Rs 2.1 million into the country has been arrested by customs officials today (Aug 21).
The suspect, a 23-year old, had arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport from Chennai, India at around 7:20 am.
He had claimed that an Indian national had requested that the jewellery be delivered to a person in Colombo.
According to customs officials, 16 pendents weighing 369 grams each, 21 earrings, 11 rings, and 21 bangles had been recovered from the suspect.
