This week’s tragedy in Sangamitta Mawatha, Buwelikada, Kandy that took away the lives of a young family including a one month old baby could have been prevented, experts said if early preventive measures were taken.
Lack of financial allocation for geo surface analysis, political interference in building planning at local authority level, failure in state’s involvement in obtaining professional/expert assistance, and the absence of continuous reviews of buildings is putting the lives in Central hills in danger.
Plans are ahead to review all buildings in Kandy constructed prior to 2011 to identify possible risks of collapse. Read more about the tragedy and causes in tomorrow's the Sunday Times edition.
