The cabinet has approved certain amendments made by the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on Legal Affairs to the Criminal Procedure Act.
In June this year, a gazette notification had been issued to amend the Act.
However, it had been amended by the SOC before being put forward to be passed in Parliament. Any gazette or ordinance is submitted to Parliament through the SOC.
Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale, in a cabinet paper, said that the Legal Draftsman had classified the changes as committee-level amendments.
According to the law, committee-level amendments which have an effect on the Act must be approved by the cabinet before being tabled in Parliament.
