Cabinet has approved a ban on the sale and consumption of tobacco related products and betel leaves from the premises of all ministries, state departments and institutions.
The cabinet of ministers had granted approval to the ban following a proposal put forward by Health Minister (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne.
"This proposal was brought forward since tobacco and betel leaves are the prime contibuting factors in causing cancer," Minister Senaratne said.
He added that a circular would be issued to all state-run bodies to this effect by next week.
