The cabinet has approved a proposal to take steps to speed up procedures to obtain the release foreigners who have been detained at the Mirihana detention centre for violating immigration laws.
At present, there are 166 detainees although the capacity at the detention centre is 36, a cabinet proposal put forward by Minister Vajira Abeywardena stated.
Due to this reason, these foreign nationals have been detained with very poor facilities, the cabinet proposal read. These foreigners have been detained until a court order is issued or relevant inquiries have concluded over their breach of regulations.
