The cabinet has requested the Election Commission (EC) to remove Colombo District Secretary Sunil Kannangara from his post for promoting a presidential candidate on social media.
In a letter to the EC, the cabinet observed that the district secretary, on his Facebook account had posted remarks against ruling party presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.
Kannangara, is also the Returning Officer for Colombo, appointed by the polls body as their representative for the district.
A senior cabinet minister said the EC had stopped Kannangara’s retirement from office, citing election laws, although his term was expected to end recently.
All promotions, transfers and removals of state officials had been suspended after the presidential election had been announced to avoid granting undue advantage to a candidate.
