Police officers who apprehend drunk drivers during a special operation which will be in effect from July 5 will be awarded cash rewards Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.
Accordingly, cash prizes of Rs 2500 and Rs 5000 will be awarded for police officers who arrest a drunk driver for operating a private or public transport vehicle respectively.
Mr. Gunasekara told the press today that the number of drunk driving cases during the first six months of the year had stood at more than 36,000.
The number of such cases last year had been recorded at 150,000, he noted.
