The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) today (Dec 16) requested Court to grant permission to analyze data from 20 telephone numbers in connection to a case involving former Minister Patalie Champika Ranawaka and his driver.
Mr Ranawaka appeared before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Niranjala de Silva, over a case involving a road accident which took place in 2016.
On Friday, the Police filed a case before the Colombo Magistrate's Court, stating that the former minister was a suspect in the accident and imposed a travel ban on him and on his driver.
Further, the Magistrate granted permission to the CCD to conduct further investigations into the telephone numbers.
The accident on February 28, 2016 at Sarana Mawatha in Rajagiriya, where Ranawaka's vehicle collided with a motorcycle left two young men injured.
The former Minister denied that he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. A person claimed to be the driver of the Ministry vehicle surrendered to the police following day. He was arrested and released on a Rs. 500,000 bail.
However, two witnesses have come forward claiming that it was the former minister at the wheels and they have submitted affidavits to the court.
