State Minister for Railway Services C.B. Ratnayaka has directed the Railway Department to have CCTV cameras in all railway stations and in selected rail passenger carriages.
Mr Ratnayake said the instructions had gone out in view of complaints that passengers including females were harassed and baggage was being stolen.
He said the respective stations will be required to monitor the CCTV round the clock and take necessary action against the offenders.
“The complaints that women face harassment and the removal of fittings from carriages have increased. Therefore the fixing of CCTV will be useful," he said.
He said the respective police stations will be informed to take necessary action against the offenders as the complaints will be supported with evidence.
