Celebrated Sri Lankan poet, writer Jean Arasanayagam passed away yesterday at her residence in Peradeniya, Kandy following a brief illness. She was 87.
As the country's most cherished English language writer winning many awards over the decades, she was a recipient of the Gratiaen prize in 2017. She was also awarded the National Award for Literature in 1984. She has authored more than 50 books of both poetry and creative fiction.
Born to a Dutch Burgher family on December 2, 1931, Ms. Arasanayagam obtained an M.Litt in Literary Linguistics from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. She was a fellow in the Creative Activities of the International Writing Programme at the University of Iowa in 1990.
She was a Visiting Fellow at Exeter University, UK, in the Faculty of Arts. She taught English at various institutions in Sri Lanka. She is survived by her husband and her two daughters.
