Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne conducted an inquiry into the conditions of former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara in hospital today (Jul 2).
The former Defence Secretary and the police chief who has been sent on compulsory leave had been asked to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today. However, they had failed to do so by hospitalising themselves citing health issues.
Instructions to appear at the CID had been issued after the Attorney General had called for their arrest by naming them as suspects over the failure to prevent the recent terrorist bombings.
Fernando and Jayasundara had subsequently been arrested while receiving treatment at the Colombo General Hospital and the Police Hospital respectively.
The attorneys of both suspects have been instructed to appear before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court tomorrow.
