A Chilaw urban councillor has been arrested for abetting a suspect involved in the drug trade in Chilaw, Police Spokesman S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said.
One suspect was arrested over the possession of nearly two grams of heroin in Chilaw on March 23.
The Chilaw Police which commenced further investigations had arrested the urban councillor identified as 65-year old Stanley Louise Fernando at around 9:30 am today. He was arrested while returning from a leading politician's house in the area.
The councillor has been detained until April 14 after being produced before the Meegamuwa Magistrates Court, police said.
