CID nets female accountant for Rs.20 million fraud

A female accountant of a bank in Gampaha, who is accused of defrauding over Rs.20 million, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from Kegalle.

The accountant is alleged to have defrauded the money while serving at the bank's main office in Gampaha. 

The CID had obtained a court order from the Gampaha Magistrate's Court prohibiting the suspect from traveling abroad. Meanwhile, the suspect had returned to the country from Dubai on Wednesday (18) where she was arrested by officers from the Department of Emigration and Immigration at the Katunayaka Airport. However, the suspect had managed to escape from the custody of immigration officers. 

Using data obtained from cell phone towers, CID detectives had later traced the suspect to a location in Kegalle, from where she was arrested yesterday (19). 

The 36-year-old suspect is a resident of Gampaha. The suspect is due to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate. 

Meanwhile, the CID has launched a separate inquiry over how the suspect managed to escape from the custody of immigration officers.
