A police sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has been further remanded until April 05 for soliciting a bribe from a businessman.
This was announced when the accused was produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today (Mar 22).
The suspect has been accused of requesting a bribe of Rs 80,000 in order to refrain from filing a court case over a fraudulent cheque transaction in which the suspect is alleged to have been involved.
The Bribery Commission had told court that the sergeant had previously requested another bribe of Rs 513,000 from this businessman.
In addition, the sergeant had solicited Rs 20,000 from a sum of Rs 100,000 that he had obtained by claiming to bribe the Maligakande Magistrate.
Court also heard that the Bribery Commission was investigating further into the incident.
