Chief Justice 43 Shirani Bandaranayake who resumed duties today will retire from her post tomorrow morning, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka Upul Jayasuriya said.
He said that Ms Bandaranayake was not removed legally and therefore the President had invited her to resume duties. Accordingly CJ 43 arrived at the Supreme Courts and assumed duties in the chambers of the Chief Justice.
Chief Justice 44 Mohan Peiris did not arrive in the courts today.
Mr Jayasuriya said that a ceremonial sitting will be held to mark the retirement of Ms Bandaranayake.
He said earlier the President had communicated to CJ Peiris to step down from office since his appointment was illegal.
Lawyers protested outside the courts earlier in the day against CJ Peiris.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to make a statement in parliament about the Chief Justice.
