A brand new building complex will be constructed at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court at a cost of USD 94.5 million, the Justice Ministry said.
The project, titled ‘House of Justice’, will comprise four buildings, and would be constructed on a six-acre plot of land, a spokesman for the ministry told Times Online.
A 12-storeyed building comprising 40 courtrooms, an eight-storeyed building each for the Justice and Prison Reforms Ministry, a training centre for judges, and a legal department would be constructed under the project.
According to the ministry, 13 bids have been received for the construction of the buildings, but tenders have not been handed over to any company yet.
International companies located overseas or currently engaged in a project in Sri Lanka were invited to bid after cabinet approval was granted to this effect, the Ministry noted.
The Justice Ministry observed that the current buildings at the premises of the Colombo Magistrate’s court were in a dilapidated state, and this project is expected to resolve this issue.
