The Health Ministry has decided to impose a colour coding system to measure sugar levels in solid foods from April 01.
A rise in the number of patients affected due to high intakes of sugar, salt and oil had prompted the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Nutrition to impose this mechanism on solid foods.
The colour coding system was initially introduced in 2017 on soft drinks in order to curb the number of diabetes patients.
Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne has also instructed the Deputy Director of the Environmental and Food Safety Unit of the MoH Lakshman Gamlath to implement the mechanism from April 01 according to the Food Act No 26 of 1980.
Accordingly, solid and semi-solid food with high amounts of sugar, salt or fat will be specified along with the colour code.
Food manufacturers have already been notified of the move, the Health Ministry said.
