The names of four new judges nominated by President Maithripala Sirisena to fill the vacant positions in higher courts has been approved by the Constitutional Council today (Jan 07).
This was approved when the Constitutional Council (CC) convened a special meeting with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya at the parliamentary complex.
The CC granted approval to a name proposed by the President to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Supreme Court judge Eva Wanasundara.
Further, the CC also confirmed the names of two judges for the Supreme Court and one judge for the Appeal Court which were nominated by President Sirisena and later approved by the Council.
Accordingly, three judges for the Supreme Court and one judge for the Appeal Court will be appointed in due course following the approval granted by the CC upon the recommendations of the President.
Speaker Karu Jaysuriya, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister Thalatha Athukorale, MP Bimal Ratnayake, Jayantha Danapala, Nanganandan Selvakumaran, and Javid Yusuf attended today's meeting.
