President Maithripala Sirisena, issuing a special statement today said that the corrupt practices of MPs and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's conduct were the main reasons to dissolve Parliament.
"By last week the individual worth of Members of Parliament was estimated as Rs 100 million to Rs 150 million, and in one instance as high as Rs 500 million" the President said.
He added that the corrupt practices which entailed the Central Bank Bond Scam including the value placed on MPs was a prime reason to dissolve Parliament.
President Sirisena then went on to describe the behaviour of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as "peculiar" while citing it as the second reason for the dissolution of Parliament
He added that Mr. Jayasuriya disregarded standing orders and Parliamentary conventions while attempting to overlook the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister
