Court instructs CID to carry out further investigations and report on Pujith, Hemasiri's arrest on Oct 3

News

Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today (Jul 22) instructed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to carry out further investigations and report to the court on October 03, regarding the arrest of two top state officials over the Easter Sunday attacks.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara, and former Defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando, were arrested by the CID and later granted bail, after the Attorney General had instructed their arrest over the failure to prevent the terrorist bombings on April 21.

During today’s hearing, Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Dileepa Peiris, appearing for the prosecution told court that a statement has been recorded from Mr. Fernando, while two statements have been obtained from the IGP.

A lawyer representing IGP Jayasundara said that his client has been affected by a recent press statement issued by AG’s office concerning the case recently.

However, DSG Peiris had responded saying that he was not aware of the statement, and it would be brought to the attention of the AG in due course.

Meanwhile, the AG's revision petition against the Chief Magistrate's decision to release the suspects on bail, will be taken up for support at the Colombo High Court tomorrow.

The suspects have been accused of violating several counts of the Penal Code owing to their alleged failure to prevent the tragedy despite having prior intelligence warnings over the attacks.
