A total of 140 out of 535 schools in the Northern Province have been closed due to a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 in the province.
Accordingly, 69 schools in the Jaffna education zone, 66 in the Valikamam education zone and five schools in the Vavuniya education zone have been closed until further notice, the Northern Province Education Secretary's office stated.
The school closures follow the detection of a number of new COVID-19 infected individuals in the province. They include a student at a school in Vavuniya as well as several individuals in Valikamam and Uduvil in Jaffna.
However, 395 schools in the province remain open under strict health guidelines.
