A total of 140 persons have died from COVID-19 related complications with another three deaths reported on Sunday from Maggona, Kahathuduwa and Kotte areas.
Two of the male deaths (aged 98 and 71) were due to COVID triggered pneumonia while the third deceased is an 80-year-old male who died from renal failure.
Meanwhile, 648 COVID positive cases were reported on Sunday increasing the total from the second wave to 24,322 cases. Out of the 648 cases detected, 197 were from the prison cluster, Government Information Department said.
All schools in the Galle education zone will be closed until further notice due to several COVID positive cases being reported from the area and travel restrictions imposed in several grama seva divisions in Galle, Southern Province Education Secretary Ranjith Yapa said.
