The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) has refuted Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe’s remarks that Sri Lanka is the only country in South Asia which has trained teachers.
Issuing a press release, the Union stated that Mr. Wickremesinghe had made these remarks at an event held yesterday (Jul 4).
The CTU pointed out that 1,119 unqualified teachers had been granted appointments in the North Western Province last month after a cabinet proposal to this effect had been passed last year.
“These appointments were granted by falsely claiming that these teachers had been serving voluntarily since the war ended in 2009,” the Union claimed.
The release added that 3880 persons who had passed only six subjects at their G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination had been appointed as Sports Instructors this year.
Accordingly, the union lamented over the government’s moves to create a false impression that the Education Sector was performing well in the country.
