A Sri Lankan passenger who attempted to smuggle cartons of foreign cigarettes from Dubai was arrested by Customs Officers at the Katunayake Airport today (Dec 9).
According to Customs Media Spokesperson Sunil Jayaratne, the arrested individual has been identified as a 33-year-old businessman from Nattandiya. It was also revealed that he had on a previous occasion been penalised for smuggling cigarettes as well.
The suspect arrived in the island on Fly Dubai flight F-548. Further, Customs Media Spokesman stated that the suspect had smuggled 91 cartoons containing 18,200 cigarettes valued at more than Rs 10,000,000.
