Sri Lanka Customs officials arrested two Sri Lankan passengers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake today (Sept 24) for attempting to illegally smuggle a stock of cigarettes into the country.
Customs Acting Spokesman, Lal Weerakoon told Times Online that the suspects had arrived on flight UL 226. One suspect had brought a stock of 13,600 sticks of foreign cigarettes packed into 65 cartons and hidden inside a fake compartment in his travelling bag estimated to be worth Rs 900,000
The second suspect had smuggled 122 cartons of cigarettes containing 24,400 cigarettes valued at Rs. 1,464,000/-
Customs officials attached to the BIA are conducting further investigations into the incident.
