Two 40-foot containers to be exported to Iraq with 35 tons of refuse tea were seized at the Colombo Port by the Customs Department today (Dec 3).
The importer, a registered company in Kandy, had made a false declaration claiming the goods to be 37.5 tons of cocopeat, Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said.
He explained that more than 1000 bags of refused tea worth Rs 3.5 million were expected to reach Iraq through the Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates.
"Six employees of the company which attempted to illegally export the containers have been arrested," the customs spokesman told Times Online.
Further investigations are underway.
