The Customs Director-General has called for an inquiry on the UK freight containers said to have been carrying mattresses which had been seized recently.
A special committee comprising senior customs officials have been appointed to conduct a probe and submit a report by next week, Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said.
He added that steps would be taken to return these containers to their country of origin following the submission of the report.
The Consumer Protection Unit of Sri Lanka Customs seized 65 freight containers containing used mattresses imported from overseas.
So far, no individual has come forward to claim the containers, another customs department official noted.
