The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) today (Oct 18) declared its fullest support to ensure the victory of presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa at the upcoming election.
"The CWC led by Arumugam Thondaman will work day and night towards ensuring the victory of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa," CWC national organiser Perumal Rajadurai said.
He made these remarks after the CWC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today pledging support to its presidential candidate Rajapaksa.
Rajadurai noted that the CWC's National Council which comprises around 300 members, had unanimously agreed to support Rajapaksa at the upcoming poll.
The CWC led by parliamentarian Arumugam Thondaman, mostly relies on the votes of the estate community in the central regions of the country.
Accordingly, SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris said that Rajapaksa would implement a special plan to enhance the quality of Sri Lankan tea under his rule.
"Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has promised that he will increase the daily wage of tea estate workers upto Rs 1000," Prof. Peiris said at the ceremony.
CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman and SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris signed the MoU at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
