Cyclone 'FANI' (pronounced as FONI), is "likely" to move away from Sri Lanka and head towards the Odisha coast of India, the Meteorological Department said.
The cyclone was located about 750 kilometers off Jaffna 11:30 pm yesterday (Apr 01), a forecast from the Department read.
Strong winds up to 60 kmph can be expected over the island, especially in the Central hills, Northern, North central, Uva and Southern provinces and in the Puttalam, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times across the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western, Uva and North-western provinces and in Mannar district.
Heavy falls upto about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the above areas, the Met. Department noted.
The general public, Naval and fishing communities are requested to pay heed to the advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
