The Tangalle High Court imposed the death penalty on Geegana Gamage Amarasiri alias ‘Julampitiya Amare’ for the deaths of two persons at a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) meeting.
The incident took place during the local government elections held in 2012.
Two persons were killed and several others injured after a group of men had opened fire at a JVP rally in Katuwana, Hambantota.
While ‘Julampitiya Amare’ surrendered to the police following this shooting incident, he was remanded and later the Attorney General filed charges against him before the Tangalle High Court.
