President Maithripala Sirisena said that the death penalty will be implemented within the next two months on those already convicted on drug offences. President made the remarks while addressing Parliament today. He pledged to implement the death penalty on drug traffickers no matter the opposition.
President also revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had recorded a statement from him on an alleged plot to assassinate him and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
He appealed to human rights organisations in the country and foreign countries not to stand in the way of Sri Lanka’s decision to implement the death penalty.
