Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to appoint a dedicated police officer to look into issued faced by Grama Niladharis and other field officers when performing their duties, the PM's Office said.
The PM met with trade unions representing Grama Niladharis, Economic Development Officers and Agricultural Research Officers at his official residence in Wijerama Road this morning (12) to discuss issues faced by their members when implementing the Government's plan to provide relief to persons who lost their livelihood due to measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
During the discussion, Mr Rajapaksa made the suggestion to appoint a dedicated police officer to look into the problems faced by these field officers and provide solutions.
The Premier also instructed health officials to take steps to provide face masks and gloves to these field officers in response to an appeal made by trade union leaders. The union leaders pointed out such safety measures were necessary as the field officers come into contact with many individuals during the course of their duties.
Mr Rajapaksa also took the opportunity to express appreciation for the services rendered by the field officers in this time of disaster even risking their own lives.
