Two MoUs were signed on Tuesday in order to grant vessel monitoring devices to SL Navy for restraining illegal fishing, human trafficking and illicit drug trade on Sri Lankan waters and international waters, Fisheries ministry said.
The move is to ensure the future delivery of an efficient service by the aquatic research office operating under NARA and the Ministry of Defence
The event was taken place at NAQDA with the participation of the Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Karunasena Hettiarachchi and the Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries Mrs. Mangalika Adikari.
Minister Amaraweera said that currently Sri Lanka is in possession of a maritime area 60 times larger than the land and in 2020 a sea area of 20 times larger than Sri Lanka is expected to be given internationally.
"President has named the month of June as the Anti-drug month. So, under this agreement prevention of illicit drug trading at sea will be possible with the use of vessel monitoring devices," Minister said.
