The development of the Palali Airport and the Kanakasanthurai sea port will commence from February 15, the Jaffna District Secretariat’s office said yesterday (Feb 05).
The development of both entities would take place as a joint operation by the Indian and the Sri Lankan government.
Cabinet approval has already been granted to carry out the development project at a cost of Rs 2 billion.
It is expected that the Indian government would provide USD 45.27 billion for the development of Kanakasanthurai sea port.
Initially, a fixed airline service is expected to operate between the Palali International Airport and Chennai, India. This would be followed by the inclusion of several other airlines in a bid to utilise the institution as an international airport.
Meanwhile, trading activities are also expected to be enhanced between the two countries via the Palali International Airport while India is expected to carry out their trade activities in the vicinity of the Kankasanthurai sea port.
According to an agreement signed between the two countries, the first phase of the development would take place for 15 months.
