The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) says that the Panama-flagged oil tanker "MT New Diamond" that has got into distress 38 nautical miles off Sangamankanda in the east coast was carrying 270, 000 Metric Tonnes of oil from Kuwait to India.
MEPA Chairperson Dharshani Lahandapura stated that 19 of the 23 crew members on board the vessels had been rescued by a passing vessel, "MV Helen." The ship's captain and two engineers are still on board the vessel while the whereabouts of one sailor are currently unknown, she added.
