Dumping Colombo garbage at Aruwakkalu to be discontinued from tomorrow - Megapolis Ministry

News

The Megapolis Ministry says it will discontinue accepting garbage from Colombo at the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill, from tomorrow (Oct 16), following remarks made against the project by Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake.

In a letter to the Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council, the Ministry expressed disappointment towards a remark made by Ms. Senanayake to local media.

The Mayoress was quoted as saying that the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill is a “failed project” and that “ministers have started taking ransom” from her.

“The statement made by Her Worship the Mayoress is very disturbing and implies that Colombo Municipal Council is capable of finding a better solution for dumping their waste,” Megapolis Ministry Secretary Nihal Rupasinghe said in the letter.

He pointed out that the Ministry had taken steps to take garbage from Colombo in Aruwakkalu to avoid creating a further environmental hazard in Kerawalapitiya, where garbage had been dumped until August this year.

“...Kerawalapitiya site has come to its full capacity, there is no possibility of dumping garbage at Kerawalapitiya further,” the letter read.

The Ministry Secretary emphasized that the “only solution” for waste disposal is the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill which has been partially constructed.

The decision to dump garbage at Aruwakkalu, had met with stiff resistance from area residents, who constantly attacked garbage trucks and staged protests, citing health concerns.
