The Election Commission (EC) has instructed all public and state employers to grant a special full pay leave for employees to cast their vote at the presidential election on November 16.
Issuing a statement, the EC said that employees, upon making a written request, should be granted a leave period of not less than four hours to cast their vote in keeping with the Presidential Elections Act.
This leave should be considered "outside the employees' normal leave entitlement", the EC said.
Any employer failing to do so could be liable to a fine of Rs 500, and / or imprisonment not more than a month, the statement warned. It noted that employers will have to decide on the time required by an employee to travel to and from a polling station.
The Presidential election will take place between 7 am to 4 pm.
