The National Election Commission (NEC) has written to the President seeking to instruct four governors, supporting a presidential candidate, to go on leave until November 18.
NEC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, in the letter, identified governors A.J.M. Muzammil, Peshala Jayaratne, Sarath Ekanayake, and Shan Wijayalal, as those who have been supporting presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Deshapriya said their conduct has "affected the EC's efforts to conduct a free and fair election" on November 16.
Accordingly, the polls chief requested the President to instruct the governors to go on leave until November 18 and avoid engaging in political activities during that period.
He had also requested the President to issue instructions against the usage of their state property such as vehicles during that time frame.
