The Election Commission (EC) has instructed the Education Ministry to immediately suspend its orders to admit some 44,000 students to state schools.
These instructions were issued after Principals had complained to the EC, citing that the ministry's orders have been given in the run-up to the presidential poll.
Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, previously denied any irregularities in issuing such orders, stating that it had been done in line with a gazette published prior to announcing the November 16 election.
However, the Principals had complained that these orders had not been made in line with the gazette, a senior EC official said.
