Naval personnel attached in Silawathurai in the Northwestern Naval Command arrested 8 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities using unlawful fishing gear in the sea area of Silawathurai yesterday, Navy said.
During the arrest; 2 dinghies, 2 unauthorized fishing nets (Surukku) and 2 pairs of diving fins were taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons and belongings were handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further investigations.
The final rites of veteran broadcaster, writer, and lyricist Nirmala de Alwis will be held today at Peradeniya.
