Eight spill gates of the Thabbowa Reservoir were opened at around 7:45 am today (Oct 21), irrigation engineers in Puttalam said.
Four spill gates were opened upto two feet while the others were opened upto 2.5 feet, releasing upto 3500 cubic feet of water a second.
Water levels in the Thabbowa reservoir had increased due to heavy rains in the Karuwalagaswewa area resulting in spill gates being opened gradually.
Engineers said that spill gates would be closed down if the rains recede.
The Thabbowa resevoir has 20 spill gates measuring 18 feet in height, and holds a capacity of 15,400 acre feet.
